How to make artists' oil paints

The final step of making oil paint is grinding, which serves to disperse the pigments even more finely in the binder. Doing this will make your color more intense and boost its tinting power.

For this step you may use aglass muller, a traditional tool that will allow the finest possible dispersion of pigments. This is a particularly handy instrument to have on hand when you’re preparing a large quantity of paint. Using both hands, press down and make circular motions.

If you don't have a muller, you can use your flexible steel spatulas to grind. Don't feel bad a muller isn't necessary to make artists' oil paints, you can make very good oil paints without a muller.
