waxes in kama products | kamapigment.com-english

Waxes is a class of organic compounds of both natural or synthetic origin that are hydrophobic and malleable solids at normal room temperatures.

They include esters, higher alkanes, and lipids (fats), typically with melting points above 40 °C (104 °F). Waxes are insoluble in water (hydrophobic) but soluble in organic, nonpolar solvents and vegetables oils. Natural waxes of different types are produced by plants and animals as well as can also occur in petroleum. Waxes that are produced by animals typically consist of wax esters derived from a variety of carboxylic acids and fatty alcohols. In waxes of plant origin, characteristic mixtures of unesterified hydrocarbons may predominate over esters. The composition depends not only on species, but also on the geographic location of the organism.

Waxes have many uses in the art world: in the case of the encaustic paint technique, it is essentially the binder in conjunction with damar resin. It is also used extensively in oil painting mediums and varnishes or in restoration and conservation. In crafts, woodfinishing or candle making waxes also has lots of uses.
