Virtual demonstration

Egg tempera

When painting in egg tempera, don't mix all of your pigment and binder together at once. Instead, start by grinding you pigments into a paste with water, then prepare your paint by mixing small quantities of egg yolk and pigment paste as needed while you are painting. We do this because egg yolk dries quickly and is non-resoluble when dry. Paint made in advance would dry out and ultimately be wasted.

To prepare a pigment paste, follow the procedure that is illustrated in the demonstration on making acrylic paints with dry pigments (steps 2 through 6) until you have a well dispersed pigment paste.
