Egg tempera

Egg tempera is one of the world’s oldest painting techniques. Even though it is quite easy to paint in tempera, it remains unknown to most contemporary artists. This is particularly unfortunate in that tempera is a technique that can produce works of great permanence and quality.

You will needdry pigments, one egg yolk, flexible steel spatulas or a glass muller, as well as a glass surface to work on and acontainer to prepare the paint.

A piece of glass mounted securely onto a table, like the one we use in this demonstration, is the ideal surface for preparing any sort of paint. It is a low-cost tool that's easy to put together, and it makes the whole process of preparing paint a lot easier.
